Home Winemaking 101

Did you know that you can ferment wine in only a couple of weeks? A lot of people don’t know that making your own wine is really easy and can be a fun hobby.

Usually wine is made from grapes, but wines are made all around the world out of all kinds of fruit. I always say you can make wine out of just about anything; all you need is water, sugar, and flavoring. But considering how many kinds of fresh fruit are available in Florida, fruit wine is an easy place to start. You might not make the best tasting wine at first, but with some practice and basic knowledge, you can perfect your wine. This class will take the mystery out of the process and give you the knowledge you need to make your own delicious wine at home.

Dan Durica lives at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in Missouri where he has his own vineyard. He’s been making wine for over 30 years and each year puts up a new vintage of his grape wine. You can see more about his life on his Youtube channel Hardcore Sustainable.

Although our base price for this course is $30, Sweetwater is a nonprofit that puts on educational programs for elementary schools in the neighborhood and teaches them about food systems and basically where their food comes from. We also host community volunteer days and a farmer’s market every Sunday from November through May. You can donate to Sweetwater in addition to your course fee if you’d like to help us continue our programs. And if you want to get your hands dirty in our gardens you can contribute your time by volunteering Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings from 9-12.
